SC Freiburg missed the premier class at Völler's farewell
SC Freiburg missed the first participation in the Champions League. The team of coach Christian Streich lost 1-2 (0-0) on the last Bundesliga matchday at Bayer Leverkusen and no longer passed RB Leipzig in the final table.
After its dress rehearsal for the DFB Cup final, the Europa Leagues club took sixth place and solved the Europa League ticket for the second time. The SC would have won the game for the royal class qualification and would have had to hope for a defeat of the Leipzig people at Arminia Bielefeld.
Revanchions for the lost remote duel can take the string team on a big stage next Saturday (8:00 p.m./ARD and Sky): In Berlin, the Breisgauer and the Saxons are fighting for the greatest triumph of their respective club history in the DFB Cup final.
Lucas Alario (54th) and Exequiel Palacios (90.+7) scored the gates of the hosts in the sold -out Bayarena, which thus prepared the hoped -for farewell gift.
Bayer fans say goodbye to Rudi Völler
The 62-year-old experienced his last game as a Europa Leagues director of the Leverkusener, and he changes to the Rhineländer shareholders' committee for the new season. Janik Haberer (88th) had achieved the interim equalization of the guests in the final phase.
Before the game, the former DFB team boss Völler was emotionally adopted by the Leverkusen Appendix with a choreo. The fans presented a selection of Völler's best sayings behind the lettering "Thank you Rudi".
Both sides initially did little on the field. Leverkusen owned slightly larger game shares. For the first time, however, the guests appeared dangerously in front of the goal when Lucas Höler put a header on the post (20th). Otherwise, mistakes and caution shaped the game of both teams. Successful combinations were in short supply.
Freiburg wakes up late
At Bayer, top scorer Patrik Schick missed the best chance in the first section from a very short distance. For Freiburg, Vincenzo Grifo approached the goal with a Schlenzer, but moved (44.).
After the break there was a little more pace in the game. Shortly after national player Nico Schlotterbeck (future Borussia Dortmund) lost the ball on the outside in his last Bundesliga game for the Freiburger, Schick put the ball on Alario. The Argentinian just had to insert.
Freiburg initially seemed shocked, Bayer was now better in the game and had chances for the next goal.
