In urtuk: desolation, you browse the country to try to survive the ravaged world, meeting annoying bandits, premium hunters, grotesque monsters and much more. After the end of a battle, you have the opportunity to extract mutations from your enemies and use them on members of your group to improve their attributes. You must extract them after the fight, then decide how to use them. When you finish a battle to extract these mutations, you need enough essence of life to do this. If you do not have enough essence of life, you will not be able to extract them from an enemy and you will have to go to the next meeting. Usually, at the end of a battle, your group receives a decent amount of lifestyle, so extracting at least one mutation should be possible.
