Mario Golf: Super Rush developers wanted maps the size of Hyrule Field, Zelda's team of Nintendo helped
When Mario Golf was launched: Super Rush in June, we found that it was a solid entrance in the series, although it lacked that little pizazz and creativity necessary to make it something that was really worth it. However, a new feature that changed things a bit was Speed Golf, a way that allows you to run without problems for each hole field in Hoyo between shots.
In a recent interview with Japanese magazine Nintendo Dream, Hiroyuki Takahashi (producer) and Shugo Takahashi (director) of Camelot explain that the new mode encouraged the team to create fields where the 18 holes are connected on the same map, instead of having Charging screens. They create the illusion that you are still playing in the same area.
In the translations shared by Nintendo Everything, we see that the team was aimed at creating a map as big as Hyrule Field of Zelda, and even had the help of the Zelda team: Breath of the Wild of Nintendo to help work In that goal:
s. Takahashi: The fields are also huge. We receive Nintendo technical support for this game.
h. Takahashi: The fields of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild were amazing, right? With the concept of Speed Golf being the focus of this game, something we consider for a long time was to put the 18 holes in a field. (Laughter)
Zelda: Breath of the Wild was an inspiration behind the size of the Super Rush fields.
In previous games, the screen had to be changed in each hole, but transitions between the holes in this game are much softer.
s. Takahashi: I admit that I always wanted to do this, but the technology at the time of each previous entry never allowed it. Especially in the era of Mario Golf 64 (laughs).
We only show it in a small part of the game, but we really wanted to make a game in which you hit the ball anywhere from the vast fields. A game in which if you hit the ball until the next hole, you will have to go and hit it until the end. Our goal was a map of the size of Hyrule Field, and Zelda's team in Nintendo shared ideas with us on how to get there.
h. Takahashi: Thanks to the help of him, Mario Golf was able to evolve. I think it is specifically thanks to the maps that we could release the shooting system.
In a separate translation that covers the same Nintendo Dream interview, it was also revealed that the team was originally considering the name 'Mario Golf Aces' for the title, after the success of Mario Tennis Aces. However, it was finally decided that Super Rush would be more appropriate to highlight the spirit and speed of Speed Golf.
